Columbo actor Peter Falk “couldn’t remember” his award-winning role near the end of his life

With his wrinkled raincoat, cigar, and signature squint, Peter Falk turned **Columbo** into one of television’s most unforgettable detectives. The seemingly absent-minded investigator always caught criminals off guard, often returning with **“just one more thing”** before exposing the truth. Falk’s brilliant performance earned him four Emmy Awards and made Columbo a beloved character around the world.

Behind the fame was a story of determination. At just three years old, Falk lost his right eye to retinoblastoma and wore a prosthetic eye for the rest of his life, giving him the famous squint that became part of his image. Although some believed his condition would prevent him from succeeding as an actor, he proved them wrong by earning two Academy Award nominations before becoming one of television’s biggest stars.

His personal life, however, was marked by challenges. Falk was married to his college sweetheart, Alyce Mayo, for 16 years, and they adopted two daughters, Catherine and Jackie. After their divorce, he married actress Shera Danese. In later years, his relationship with Catherine became the subject of public disagreements and legal disputes, as she claimed she had been denied access to her father during his final years, while Danese’s representatives rejected those allegations.

Peter Falk passed away peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in June 2011 at the age of 83. He had been living with Alzheimer’s disease, and pneumonia was listed as the primary cause of death. Sadly, the illness reportedly progressed to the point where he no longer remembered playing Columbo. Even so, his remarkable career and the detective who always solved the impossible cases—armed with **“just one more thing”**—remain an enduring part of television history.
