Discovered Metal Balls Beneath Your Sink? This Is What They Signify

Finding tiny metal balls under your kitchen sink can be confusing, especially if they look rusty, damaged, or as though they appeared out of nowhere. In many cases, the source may be closer than you think: your pull-out or pull-down kitchen faucet.

These faucets use a retractable hose that moves in and out when you use the sprayer. To help the hose return smoothly to its original position, many faucets have a weight attached underneath the sink. Some of these weights contain small metal balls or similar metal pieces.

Over time, the faucet weight can become worn, cracked, or corroded. If it breaks apart, its small metal components may fall into the cabinet below. “To investigate, open the cabinet and follow the faucet hose.” Look closely at the weight for cracks, damage, or missing pieces.

If the weight is damaged, replacing it is usually a simple repair. Replacement weights are widely available, but make sure the new one is compatible with your faucet model. If the weight looks intact, check other nearby appliances, including the dishwasher or garbage disposal, for loose metal components.

There is usually no reason to panic when you find these pieces. A careful inspection of the faucet hose, weight, plumbing connections, and nearby appliances should help identify the source. Checking these parts occasionally can also help you spot worn or damaged components before they turn into a bigger plumbing problem.
