Driving licence renewal: what is the age limit and what changes after 50, 70 and 80 years old?

Many drivers notice their license expiration date approaching and wonder what it means. Do they need to retake a driving test? Do rules change with age? In most cases, renewing a license is simply an administrative process. Once you understand the requirements and prepare the documents, the renewal is usually quick and straightforward.

A common concern is whether age affects the right to drive. In reality, “there is no maximum legal age for driving.” People can continue driving as long as they are capable of doing so safely. For a standard Category B license—the one used for cars—“the administrative validity period is 15 years,” and this generally does not change based on age. Renewal mainly allows authorities to update the photo and personal information on the document, and “in most cases, no driving test or new exam is required.”

For most drivers, the rule is simple: “A Category B license is valid for 15 years,” and renewal is required after that time regardless of age. However, there are exceptions. If a doctor determines that a medical condition could affect driving ability, the license may include medical restrictions and require shorter renewal periods. These decisions are based on health conditions, not age alone.

Most drivers renewing a regular car license do not need a medical exam. It may be required only if a medical restriction already exists or if the driver holds a professional license requiring regular health checks. When needed, doctors usually evaluate vision, hearing, coordination, and overall ability to drive safely.

To renew a license, drivers typically need a valid ID, a recent passport-style photo, the current license, proof of payment for administrative fees, and sometimes a medical certificate. Many places now allow online renewal through government services, though assistance may also be available through driving schools or agencies. Costs vary, but the total is often between €25 and €50. Even after age 80, drivers can continue renewing their license normally as long as they remain medically fit to drive.
