Firefighters Want Everyone To Know What They Should Never Plug Into A Power Strip

As cold weather arrives, firefighters are reminding residents to use space heaters carefully. These devices provide quick warmth and comfort, but when used incorrectly, they can become serious fire hazards. Simple safety steps can help prevent dangerous accidents and protect homes during the winter months.

Fire departments warn that space heaters should never be plugged into power strips or extension cords. These devices can overheat because heaters require more electricity than many strips and cords are designed to handle. In some cases, overheating has caused fires, including an incident where a heater ignited furniture inside a home. Experts also note that some space heaters can reach temperatures of **up to 600°F**, making safe placement extremely important.

Residents should keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including curtains, blankets, furniture, and bedding. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that portable heaters are responsible for about **1,200 fires each year**, many of which could be prevented through proper use. Heaters should always sit on flat, stable, non-flammable surfaces and should never be placed on carpets or soft materials.

Firefighters also emphasize that space heaters should never be left running unattended or while people are sleeping. Users should regularly inspect cords for damage, remove dust from vents, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions to reduce the chance of malfunction.

When used correctly, space heaters can be a safe and effective way to stay warm. Plugging them directly into a wall outlet, keeping a clear area around them, and monitoring their operation are simple habits that can greatly reduce the risk of winter fires and help keep families safe.
