Firefighters Warn: Important Safety Reminder About Power Strip Use

As colder weather arrives, many households turn to space heaters for quick warmth in bedrooms, living rooms, or home offices. These small appliances can provide fast comfort, especially in homes with uneven heating or drafty areas.

While convenient, fire departments warn that space heaters can become dangerous if they are not used properly. Because they produce intense heat and draw significant electricity, improper use can increase the risk of electrical fires.

One of the most important safety warnings from firefighters is to never plug a space heater into a power strip or surge protector. These devices are designed for low-wattage electronics such as lamps, chargers, or small gadgets. A space heater requires far more electricity, which can overload the strip and cause it to overheat quickly. In many cases, power strips can melt or even catch fire when used this way. For safety, space heaters should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Proper placement is another critical factor. Fire authorities recommend keeping space heaters at least three feet away from anything that could burn, including curtains, bedding, furniture, or paper. The heater should sit on a flat, stable surface where it cannot easily tip over. Keeping the surrounding area clear allows heat to circulate safely and reduces the risk of nearby materials catching fire.

Supervision is equally important when using these devices. Space heaters should never be left running unattended for long periods. Firefighters strongly advise turning them off when leaving a room or going to bed. Because these appliances generate continuous heat, a small problem can quickly escalate into a serious fire if no one is present to respond.

During winter, officials also encourage households to follow general electrical safety practices. Heat-producing appliances should be unplugged when they are not in use. Extension cords should not be used as a permanent solution for powering devices that require a strong electrical load, as this can increase overheating risks over time.

By following these simple precautions, families can enjoy the comfort of extra warmth without unnecessary danger. Using space heaters responsibly—plugging them directly into wall outlets, placing them safely, and monitoring their use—helps ensure that homes stay both warm and safe during colder months.
