Found Silverfish in Your Home?

Seeing a small, silvery insect quickly disappear under a cabinet at night may mean you have silverfish. These wingless insects have flattened bodies, long antennae, and bristle-like tails. They are usually harmless to people and pets, but frequent sightings can be a sign of excess moisture. Silverfish prefer dark, humid places such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, closets, and areas around plumbing.

Silverfish feed on materials containing starches and carbohydrates, including paper, cardboard, wallpaper, book bindings, crumbs, and some stored foods. Repeated sightings may be accompanied by shed skins, scales, droppings, or minor damage to books, photographs, clothing, and paper products. However, seeing one silverfish does not automatically mean you have a serious infestation.

The best first step is to reduce moisture. Check for leaking pipes, dripping faucets, condensation, and poor ventilation. Use bathroom fans and consider a dehumidifier if an area stays damp. Keeping closets and storage areas organized can also help, especially by removing unnecessary cardboard, newspapers, and piles of paper.

Regular cleaning is another useful step. Vacuum along baseboards, inside cabinets, behind appliances, and around plumbing openings. Sticky traps can help show where silverfish are most active and whether the problem is continuing.

Most importantly, finding silverfish does not mean your home is dirty. Often, correcting humidity, moisture, and hiding places is enough to make the environment less attractive to them. If sightings continue despite these changes, consider contacting a licensed pest professional.
