For decades, a strange wooden-handled tool sat buried beneath dust in an old barn. Its purpose was almost forgotten, but the device once played an important role in the early days of mechanical milking. Known as the “Écarteur de tétine de trayeuse,” or teat cup liner expander, it was designed to protect cows from painful injuries caused by early milking machines.
When mechanical milking was introduced, rubber liners were simple tubes that had to be pushed into metal teat cups by hand. If their edges were not properly shaped, they could pinch or cut the cow’s sensitive skin. What was supposed to make milking easier could instead cause irritation, wounds, and even infections.
The small tool provided an effective answer. Its metal jaws helped spread and roll the rubber liner into a smooth, rounded edge, creating a protective lip that reduced the risk of injury. After each milking, the liners were removed and cleaned, while the expander helped prepare them for the next session.
After World War II, dairy equipment became more advanced. Manufacturers began producing rubber liners that were already molded into the correct shape, making the expander unnecessary. Its job disappeared almost overnight, and most examples were eventually thrown away.
Today, the few surviving tools offer a glimpse into an earlier period of farming, when simple devices helped make new technology safer. Though small and easily overlooked, this forgotten tool once quietly protected cows from the painful side effects of early mechanical milking.
