Here’s What Really Happens When You Sleep with Socks On

Sleeping with socks on may seem unusual, but it can actually help some people fall asleep faster. When your feet become warm, the blood vessels near the skin expand, helping your body release heat. This can lower your core temperature, which is an important signal that tells your brain it is time to rest.

The idea may sound backwards, but warming your feet can help cool the rest of your body. As your temperature naturally drops before sleep, wearing comfortable socks may support this process and make it easier to drift off. Some studies suggest that people with warm feet may fall asleep more quickly and wake up fewer times during the night. It can also be especially comfortable for people whose feet tend to feel cold in bed.

Socks may also work alongside melatonin, the hormone involved in regulating your sleep cycle. As your body prepares for sleep, temperature changes and melatonin work together, and keeping your feet warm may help support this natural process.

However, the type of socks matters. Tight or uncomfortable socks can restrict circulation or make you too warm, which may have the opposite effect. Clean, loose-fitting, breathable socks are generally the better choice. Cotton and wool can provide warmth without making your feet excessively hot.

For many people, this simple bedtime habit can improve comfort and make falling asleep easier. In the end, it’s not a trick—it’s simply a way of supporting how your body naturally prepares for rest.
