Here’s What to Do If You Spot a Lone Star Tick

Spotting a Lone Star tick can be unsettling, but staying calm and removing it properly can help reduce the risk of illness. Adult female Lone Star ticks have a distinctive silver-white spot on their backs, while males have smaller white markings. They are common in wooded areas, fields, and dense vegetation across much of the eastern United States. Unlike some ticks that wait for a host to pass, Lone Star ticks can actively seek people and animals.

If you find one attached to your skin, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward slowly with steady pressure. **“Do not twist, jerk, or yank the tick out”** because parts of the tick may remain in the skin. After removal, clean the bite area with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or an antiseptic. You can also keep the tick in a sealed container for possible identification.

Avoid using heat, chemicals, petroleum jelly, gasoline, or other substances to make the tick detach. **“Gentle, steady upward pressure is the only safe method.”** These methods can irritate the tick and increase exposure to germs.

Lone Star ticks do not transmit Lyme disease, but they can spread other illnesses. One important condition is alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy that can cause reactions to red meat and sometimes dairy products. They can also transmit ehrlichiosis, STARI, tularemia, and certain viruses. Symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, rash, or digestive problems.

After a bite, monitor yourself for unusual symptoms over the following weeks. Seek medical attention promptly for severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, confusion, a spreading rash, severe abdominal pain, or swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat. Taking precautions outdoors, checking your skin afterward, and removing ticks promptly are simple ways to lower your risk.
