How to Clean a Glass Stovetop Without Scratching It

A glass stovetop can quickly collect grease, fingerprints, splatters, and food residue, but everyday cleaning is simple. Once the surface is completely cool, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water and wipe the cooktop using a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Rinse away any soap residue and dry with a clean microfiber cloth to prevent streaks. This gentle method is ideal for keeping the surface clean after regular cooking.

For food that has dried or baked onto the glass, baking soda and white vinegar can help loosen the residue. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the affected areas, spray vinegar until it begins to fizz, and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Then gently wipe everything away with a soft cloth or sponge. The fizzing action helps soften stuck-on food, so there is less need for hard scrubbing. As the original advice says, **“Avoid scrubbing aggressively. Let the cleaning solution do most of the work.”**

When ordinary soap is not enough, use a cleaner specifically made for glass or ceramic cooktops. These products can remove grease, stains, cloudy areas, and stubborn residue without being as harsh on the surface. Always follow the product instructions and use a soft cloth or recommended applicator. Finish by buffing the cooktop dry for a cleaner, shinier appearance.

Some burnt residue may require a cooktop scraper. With the stovetop completely cool, hold the scraper at about a 30- to 45-degree angle and gently slide it beneath the residue. Never press aggressively or dig the blade into the glass. After removing the debris, clean the area with warm soapy water or cooktop cleaner.

Prevention makes cleaning much easier. Wipe spills after the surface has cooled, use cookware with smooth bottoms, and lift pots and pans instead of dragging them across the glass. Avoid steel wool, abrasive powders, scouring pads, and harsh cleaners unless specifically approved by the manufacturer. With a few minutes of regular care, your glass stovetop can remain **“shiny, streak-free, and looking like new for years to come.”**
