I Found Tiny Black Seeds Under My Mattress — At First I Thought They Were Insect Eggs

One ordinary morning, I lifted my mattress to clean underneath the bed and noticed a small pile of tiny black seeds in one corner of the frame. They were dark, dry, hard, and slightly shiny, and I immediately wondered whether they could be insect eggs or some kind of pest-related debris. Since I wasn’t sure, I took a photograph and asked a friend who knew about herbs and traditional foods. She suggested they looked like kalonji, also known as black seed or black cumin, which comes from the Nigella sativa plant.

The discovery raised another question: why would someone put black seeds underneath a mattress? Kalonji has been used as a food and traditional remedy in parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia for generations. Some cultural traditions also associate seeds and herbs with protection, good fortune, or keeping away negative influences. These beliefs vary between families and cultures and are not scientifically established as protective effects.

Then I remembered that my grandmother had stayed with us about a month earlier. She has always followed traditional customs and had noticed that I wasn’t sleeping especially well. Curious, I called her and asked, “Grandma, did you put something underneath my mattress?” After a short pause, she laughed and admitted that she had.

She explained that the seeds were kalonji and that, according to the tradition she followed, she had placed them there as a small gesture of protection and goodwill. Suddenly, what had seemed like a strange discovery had a simple and personal explanation. There were no insects or hidden household problems—just a family tradition.

The experience reminded me how quickly we can assume the worst when we encounter something unfamiliar. What looked alarming at first turned out to be something ordinary with a meaningful story behind it. Sometimes a strange discovery isn’t a warning at all. Sometimes it is simply a small reminder of family, tradition, and the people who care about us.
