If you have these cupboards above your fridge, you had better know what they’re used for

Those small cupboards above the refrigerator can look like wasted space, but they can actually provide useful extra storage. Because they are high up and may become warm, they are better suited for items you rarely need rather than everyday kitchen essentials.

They can hold appliances such as food processors, waffle makers, and other specialty gadgets that would otherwise take up valuable counter or cabinet space. Cookbooks, kitchen towels, canned goods, baking supplies, and spices can also fit well there. Small organizers or containers can help keep everything neat and easy to find when needed.

These cupboards are also a practical place for special items that are only used occasionally. Fine china, serving dishes, and cutlery reserved for holidays or celebrations can be stored safely out of the way. This keeps your main kitchen cabinets available for things you use more often while still giving those special pieces a dedicated spot.

However, there are a few things you should avoid storing there. Heat-sensitive foods, including chocolate and some ingredients, may not be suitable because of the warmth around the refrigerator. It is also best to avoid placing very heavy objects inside, especially since lifting them down from a high cabinet can be difficult and unsafe.

The next time you wonder what that awkward cabinet above your refrigerator is for, consider using it as extra storage. Keep the space organized, avoid overloading it, and use a sturdy step stool when reaching inside. A little-used cabinet can become surprisingly valuable when you store the right things in it.
