Many people think it’s for decoration!

Many everyday objects seem like simple decorations, but they often have clever engineering behind them. Small holes, extra loops, and unusual shapes are usually designed to solve specific problems. Here are some common examples that reveal the hidden purpose behind ordinary items.

The tiny hole in an airplane window is not a mistake or decoration. Known as a **”breather hole,”** it helps control pressure between the layers of the window. Airplane windows have three panes, and this small opening ensures the outer pane handles the extreme pressure difference during flight, keeping passengers safe.

The little plastic piece inside a pizza box is called a **”pizza saver.”** Although it looks like unnecessary plastic, it prevents the hot, softened cardboard lid from falling onto the pizza and ruining the toppings. Similarly, the extra holes near the top of sneakers serve a real purpose. They create a **”heel lock”** that keeps the foot secure and reduces slipping, helping prevent discomfort during walking or running.

The tiny pocket inside jeans also has a history. Originally created in the 1800s by , it was made to hold a pocket watch. The company still refers to it as the **”watch pocket,”** showing how old designs can continue in modern clothing.

The small cylinder attached to many laptop cables is another hidden tool. It contains a **”ferrite bead,”** which helps block electronic interference. Instead of being a decorative piece, it keeps signals cleaner and prevents unwanted noise from affecting devices.

Even the hole in the middle of a spaghetti spoon has a purpose. It can be used as a simple measuring guide because it is designed to hold roughly one serving of dry spaghetti.

These objects prove that many things around us are carefully designed for function, not just appearance. What looks like a random detail often has a smart solution behind it.
