My Dad Finished Repairing My Boss’s Pool and Was Refused Payment, Then One Look at the Water Told Him Exactly What to Do

My father had spent twenty-nine years fixing pools, and at sixty-one, his experience made him exceptionally good at his work. When my boss, Richard Emory, hired him to repair his neglected gunite pool, my father completed the $7,800 job in nine days, replacing the pump, repairing pipes, installing new filtration, and restoring the water. Richard signed the paperwork, but his wife, Melissa, refused to pay the full amount and offered only $3,000. She even reminded my father that Richard employed me. He calmly told me, “I’ll handle it.”

Two days later, my father called me to Richard’s house. Police cars were outside, and Richard was arguing with officers. While working on the pool, my father had noticed an unusual calcium deposit near a buried pipe. He carefully dug around it and discovered a sealed metal box hidden beneath the pool. Inside were twelve antique watches and a small clock, apparently belonging to Tibor, a Hungarian watchmaker who had once owned the property.

Instead of taking anything, my father documented the discovery and contacted Eleanor, an elderly neighbor who had known Tibor and preserved his records for twenty-five years. He then called the police. Tibor’s son, Martin, soon arrived from New Mexico, and the collection was valued at nearly $90,000. Because my father had carefully recorded everything, Martin’s family was able to establish the collection’s ownership and history.

Martin was so grateful that he offered my father a $5,000 finder’s fee. At the same time, Richard’s attorney reviewed the pool documents and confirmed that both Richard and Melissa had signed the work authorization. Richard finally paid the entire $7,800 and apologized for the situation.

On the drive home, I asked my father if he had ever thought about keeping the watches. He simply shook his head. “They weren’t mine,” he said. “You don’t take what isn’t yours. You handle it correctly.” Then he smiled and added, “Sometimes, if you do the work right, everything else finds its way home.”
