My Ex Tried to Stop Child Support to Buy His New Wife a Car

My ex called me unexpectedly one afternoon. We usually only talk about our son’s schedule, school, or medical needs, so I immediately knew something was wrong. He got straight to the point: “Sydney, I need you to pause child support for six months.” When I asked why, he explained that his wife needed a new car because hers was falling apart. Then he added, “You don’t really need the money anyway.” That was when I realized his request had nothing to do with our son’s needs.

Instead of arguing, I calmly told him, “Okay. Let’s talk next week at drop-off.” He clearly thought I had agreed. The following week, after our son went inside, I handed my ex an envelope. He opened it expecting a simple agreement, but his expression quickly changed. Inside was a letter explaining that if he stopped paying child support, I would also “be taking a break.” Our son would stay with him full-time, and he would handle all financial, educational, and medical responsibilities during those six months.

My ex immediately became angry. He insisted that I couldn’t make such a decision and called the idea ridiculous. I didn’t argue with him. I simply got into my car and left. Three days later, he sent me a message admitting that he “couldn’t manage” having our son full-time because his wife was “under a lot of stress.”

A week later, the full child support payment arrived. Along with it was a short message: “Please go back to the regular schedule.” Later that night, his wife contacted me separately and apologized. She explained that she had never asked him to stop paying child support, didn’t even want a new car, and had no idea what he had told me.

Maybe my response was harsh, but I was tired of carrying responsibilities that belonged to both parents. Child support was never supposed to be about helping my ex or his wife—it was about supporting our son.
