My grandma has these hard bumps forming on her finger joints near the nails. Why is this spreading?

As we get older, hard bumps can sometimes appear on the finger joints closest to the nails. These are known as Heberden’s nodes and are often associated with osteoarthritis. They develop when cartilage in the joint wears down, causing extra bone to form around the area. Over time, the bumps can become more visible and may affect how easily the fingers move. They can appear on one or several fingers, and having them on multiple joints does not necessarily mean the condition is suddenly spreading. Age, genetics, and repeated stress on the hands can all contribute to their development.

Some people experience little or no discomfort, while others may notice pain, stiffness, swelling, or reduced flexibility. Although these bumps are usually linked to osteoarthritis, similar changes can sometimes have other causes. A healthcare professional can examine the hands and may use X-rays to check for joint damage or rule out other conditions. “Severe pain, sudden swelling, rapid changes, or symptoms affecting the rest of the body should be evaluated by a doctor rather than assumed to be normal aging.”

For mild discomfort, gentle hand exercises, warm or cold compresses, supportive splints, and appropriate pain-relief options may help. Using ergonomic tools and avoiding unnecessary strain can also make everyday activities easier. If symptoms become persistent or interfere with daily tasks, a doctor or rheumatologist can recommend appropriate treatment.

While Heberden’s nodes can be a visible reminder of aging joints, they do not always cause serious problems. Paying attention to changes, protecting the hands from unnecessary strain, and seeking medical advice when symptoms worsen can help maintain comfort, mobility, and everyday hand function.
