My Husband Made Me Hide Upstairs During His Promotion

The chocolate cake leaned to one side because I had iced it while holding a newborn. Lucas barely noticed. He was more focused on how I looked after giving birth to our twins just 21 days earlier. That morning, he had told me his boss and several senior coworkers were coming for dinner. Instead of ordering food, I cleaned between feedings and prepared roast chicken, potatoes, salad, and cake while caring for the babies. When Lucas came home, he smiled at the table and said, “This is perfect.” Then he looked at me and asked, “You’re changing before they get here, right?” He said I wasn’t “presentable” and that the evening could affect his promotion.

He eventually told me to stay upstairs with the babies while his guests arrived. Before going up, I noticed a white binder Lucas had prepared before the twins were born. Under “RECOVERY,” he had written: “NO HOSTING. REST. ASK FOR HELP.” I carried it downstairs and placed it beside his plate. For forty minutes, I listened through the baby monitor as Lucas told everyone I had made most of the dinner and was “resting.” Then someone discovered the binder, and his boss read the recovery instructions aloud. She asked Lucas why he had ignored the plan he had created himself.

When I finally came downstairs, his boss spoke directly to him. She pointed out that he would never expect one person to handle an entire project while everyone else simply watched. “You’d never let one person carry an entire project while everyone else stood around looking important.” Then she closed the binder and told Lucas, “We’ll talk Monday.”

After everyone left, Lucas admitted that he wanted one night where everything looked under control. I told him it was under control; he simply didn’t like what control looked like. I also realized I had been helping create the problem by doing everything whenever I could, allowing him to become comfortable letting me handle it all.

Upstairs, one of the twins began crying, and Lucas immediately stood up. “I’ve got her.” He returned carrying our daughter, with spit-up staining his suit. I smiled and said, “Not very presentable.” He laughed and admitted, “I deserved that.” Then he apologized. I told him I needed him tired for a different reason—not because he had helped make everything look perfect, but because he was their father. This time, he got up and acted on it.
