My Sister Called to Say Dad Died Last Night—But He Was Sitting Three Feet Away, Listening to Her Steal His Inheritance

My sister Vanessa called at 6:30 one morning and told me our father had died during the night. The shocking part was that Dad was sitting three feet away from me, wearing his navy robe, drinking my coffee, and stealing bacon from my plate. Vanessa immediately started talking about his house, truck, bank accounts, and funeral arrangements. She said everything had been left to her and Grant, and that the locks were already being changed. Then Grant laughed and said I was finally out of the family. Dad quietly took the phone and said, “Tell me more about my funeral.” The silence that followed made it clear something was seriously wrong.

Dad had been staying with me because his furnace had failed during a winter storm. Vanessa apparently did not know he was with me and believed he was alone. Dad soon learned that someone had contacted his funeral home about his prepaid funeral arrangements. His attorney also said Vanessa had asked questions about accessing his estate during a medical emergency. Someone had even attempted to transfer Dad’s phone number to another device.

When Dad and I returned to his house, Vanessa, Grant, a locksmith, and someone preparing to evaluate his truck were already there. Dad called the police, who documented what was happening. Vanessa claimed everyone had panicked, but Dad pointed out that they had already planned to change his locks and examine his property without knowing whether he was actually dead.

Dad later discovered that Grant was having financial problems and that they had found an outdated copy of an old will. They apparently convinced themselves that the house would eventually belong to them. Dad changed his estate plan, removing Vanessa and Grant from financial and emergency authorizations and placing Vanessa’s inheritance in a trust that Grant could not control.

Months later, Vanessa apologized. Dad listened and asked one question: “If Natalie had believed you, how long were you planning to let her think I was dead?” She had no answer. Eventually, they began speaking again, cautiously. Dad still visited me, stole my bacon, and complained about my coffee. The next morning, Vanessa called again. Dad smiled as I answered. He was very much alive.
