My sister sent out wedding invites with a note saying a minimum cash gift of $150 is expected to cover the cost of our plate. Is it acceptable to mandate a specific gift amount?

Weddings are meant to celebrate love, family, and friendship, but the rising cost of celebrations has created new questions about wedding gifts. Some guests are now receiving invitations that suggest a minimum cash contribution, such as $150, to help cover the cost of their meal. While couples may see this as a practical way to manage expenses, asking for a fixed amount can make guests feel as though they are paying an admission fee rather than attending a celebration.

Traditionally, wedding gifts are voluntary and should depend on each guest’s relationship with the couple and personal budget. Many guests already spend money on travel, hotels, childcare, clothing, and other wedding-related costs. Because of this, a required or strongly suggested contribution can create unnecessary financial pressure. The idea of guests “covering their plate” may seem reasonable, but gifts are generally intended to show love and support, not reimburse the couple for the cost of hosting the event.

A more considerate approach is to clearly make contributions optional. Couples could tell guests, “Having you celebrate with us is the greatest gift of all. If you choose to give a gift, a contribution toward our future together would be deeply appreciated, but is entirely optional.” A registry or wishing well can also provide an easy way for guests to give without feeling obligated.

For guests who receive an invitation with a requested minimum, there is no need to feel guilty if they cannot afford it. They should give only what comfortably fits their budget, if they choose to give anything at all. No guest should feel ashamed because they cannot meet a specific amount.

Ultimately, weddings should focus on bringing people together rather than creating financial expectations. When gifts remain voluntary and couples show genuine gratitude to everyone who attends, the celebration can stay centered on what matters most: love, friendship, family, and the beginning of a new chapter.
