My Terminally Ill Wife Asked Me to Find My First Love as Her Final Wish

My wife Carol was dying when she asked me to find the woman who had broken my heart forty years earlier. I thought her medication was confusing her, but then she squeezed my hand and whispered, “Find Anna. You’ll understand everything once you find her.” She paused before adding, “And please… forgive me in advance.” Three days later, Carol was gone. Her final request stayed with me, especially because Anna had once been my first love. In 1985, I had asked Anna to marry me, but she suddenly disappeared after sending a letter saying she couldn’t follow me. For forty years, I believed she had simply stopped loving me.

After Carol’s funeral, I finally searched for Anna and found her living in Pittsburgh. When I confronted her about the past, she shocked me. “I never rejected you, Walter.” She explained that my mother, Ruth, had threatened her family and pressured her to end our relationship. Anna had actually been pregnant with my child, but Ruth convinced her that I had moved on and arranged for the baby to be adopted. Anna said she had never stopped loving me.

Then Anna revealed something even more painful. Carol had known the truth. She had overheard Ruth threatening Anna and later discovered that Anna was pregnant. Instead of telling me, Carol became involved in the adoption. I returned home and searched my mother’s attic, where I found old letters confirming everything. One letter from Carol admitted, “I can’t keep doing this.” Another note from Ruth simply said, “Then make sure he doesn’t.”

The biggest shock came when I discovered who had adopted Anna’s baby. It was Rebecca, the daughter Carol and I had raised for nearly forty years. The green eyes I had always noticed suddenly made sense. Rebecca was not only my adopted daughter—she was my biological daughter and Anna’s child.

I eventually told Rebecca the truth. She was devastated that Carol had hidden it, but she also understood that Carol had loved her deeply. Rebecca chose to meet Anna, finally giving them both the chance to know each other. I still love Carol, and I still struggle with what she did. I don’t know if I have forgiven her. But the secret ends with me. Rebecca now has the right to know her own story, and after forty years of silence, that story finally belongs to her.
