One Simple Windshield Wiper Tip That Can Help in Hot or Freezing Weather

Sometimes a simple car-care habit can help protect windshield wipers in extreme weather. Some drivers lift their wiper blades away from the glass when parking outside, especially when very hot or freezing conditions are expected. The practice may look unusual, but it has a practical purpose: reducing the blade’s direct contact with extremely hot or frozen glass.

During hot weather, strong sunlight and high temperatures can gradually cause wiper material to dry, harden, or crack. A car parked in direct sunlight can become much hotter than the surrounding air, leaving the windshield exposed to intense heat for hours. Lifting the blades while parked may reduce prolonged contact with the hot surface, although it cannot stop normal aging. Wipers will still eventually need inspection and replacement.

Freezing weather creates another problem. Snow, sleet, or freezing rain can cause the blades to freeze tightly against the windshield. Trying to activate frozen wipers can damage the blade or put unnecessary strain on the mechanism. Lifting them before a freezing night can help prevent this from happening. However, drivers should check their vehicle’s owner’s manual because some cars have specific procedures for positioning the wipers.

Even with careful maintenance, wipers eventually wear out. Signs include streaks, squeaking, chattering, cracked rubber, or areas that remain uncleared. When these problems appear, replacing the blades is usually the best solution. Keeping the windshield clean also improves performance, and heavy ice or snow should be removed with an appropriate scraper rather than using the wipers.

Lifting windshield wipers is not necessary in every situation, but it can be a useful precaution during extreme heat or freezing weather. As the article puts it, **“A small change in how you park your car can sometimes make routine maintenance a little easier.”** The key is to combine sensible parking habits with regular inspection and replacement when needed.
