Rock legend says he’s ‘standing up’ for Bad Bunny after ‘great’ Halftime Show

Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rican–inspired halftime show at Super Bowl LX drew praise from fans and an unexpected supporter: rock legend John Mellencamp. Reacting on X, Mellencamp wrote, “I don’t know what Bad Bunny is saying, however, I do know he is standing up for Puerto Rico and I am standing up for him. His halftime show was great.” The comment stood out amid heated cultural debate surrounding the performance.

Mellencamp’s endorsement followed earlier playful remarks he made about Bad Bunny’s name during an appearance on *Real Time with Bill Maher*. Laughing about his own history of name changes, he said, “They thought it was cornball… They like ‘Bad Bunny.’ It’s kind of a corny name. I don’t have anything against the guy, but it is a funny name.” His post on Sunday clarified his support and appreciation for the performance.

At Levi’s Stadium, Bad Bunny made history as the first artist to deliver an entirely Spanish-language Super Bowl halftime show. His set featured major hits and vivid cultural imagery rooted in Puerto Rican heritage, including jíbaros in traditional dress, a piragua stand, and a lively block-party scene filled with dancers and celebrity guests.

The show also included surprise moments, such as Lady Gaga’s salsa-inspired appearance and tributes to Latin music icons, with nods to Daddy Yankee and Ricky Martin. These elements blended celebration, nostalgia, and modern global pop into a single high-energy spectacle.

As the performance closed, the stadium screens displayed the phrase, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.” Moments later, Bad Bunny lifted a football reading, “Together, we are America.” The message resonated strongly with supporters, who saw it as a call for unity, while critics viewed it as political.

Mellencamp’s reaction added another layer to the conversation, showing how the show crossed generational and cultural lines. Whether praised for its music, symbolism, or cultural pride, the performance became one of the most talked-about moments of Super Bowl LX, proving its impact extended far beyond the field.
