Saw this huge wasp crawling slowly on my curtains inside. It looks groggy and isn’t flying much. Is there a nest inside my walls?

Finding a large wasp crawling inside your home can be alarming, but seeing one does not automatically mean there is a nest nearby. Wasps can enter through open doors and windows, cracks, vents, or even by hitching a ride on clothing and bags. This is especially common toward the end of the warm season, when temperatures begin to fall and wasps become less active.

Paper wasps, for example, may become sluggish as the weather gets colder and food becomes harder to find. If you spot one near a window or curtain, it may simply be resting or trying to escape outdoors. In many cases, the insect has entered accidentally and there may be no infestation inside your home at all.

However, repeated sightings deserve more attention. If several wasps keep appearing from the same crack, vent, roof area, or opening, a nest could be nearby. You may also notice “Buzzing or rustling sounds inside a wall,” which can be another warning sign that wasps are nesting in or around the structure.

If you encounter a single wasp, avoid panicking or disturbing it unnecessarily. If you suspect a nest, do not attempt to remove it yourself, especially if wasps are repeatedly entering or leaving from the same location. A pest-control professional can safely inspect the area and determine whether a nest is present.

To reduce the chance of wasps entering your home, repair damaged window screens, seal cracks and gaps around the building, and keep doors and windows closed when possible. These simple steps can help prevent unwanted visitors while also making it easier to notice any unusual wasp activity early.
