She married an African man at 21 and left us… but every year she sends us the same message”

Theresa, 63, raised her only daughter, Mary Lou, by herself and watched her grow into a kind, intelligent young woman with a promising future. At 21, Mary Lou fell in love with Kang Jun, a man nearly twenty years older. Theresa worried about the large age gap and the distance, but her daughter followed her heart. After a quiet wedding, Mary Lou moved to South Korea just one month later, leaving behind an emotional goodbye at the airport as both knew life would never be the same.

From that moment on, Mary Lou never came home. The years passed—first one, then five, then twelve. The only connection between mother and daughter was an annual money transfer accompanied by the exact same message: **“Mom, take care of yourself. I’m doing well.”** While the money eased Theresa’s financial burdens, those few words brought little comfort and instead filled her with unanswered questions.

The phrase **“I’m doing well”** became the source of Theresa’s greatest concern. It sounded distant and repetitive, making her wonder whether her daughter was truly happy. They managed to have only one video call during those years. Mary Lou looked healthy, but her expression seemed different. When Theresa asked why she never visited, her daughter simply replied, **“I’m very busy.”** The brief conversation only deepened her mother’s worries.

Although Theresa was grateful for the financial support, nothing could replace her daughter’s presence. Every Christmas, she cooked Mary Lou’s favorite meal and set an empty place at the table, hoping that one day her daughter would walk through the door again. The silence in her home grew heavier with each passing year.

After waiting for twelve long years, Theresa made a life-changing decision. Without telling Mary Lou and despite never traveling abroad before, she bought a ticket to South Korea. She was determined to discover for herself what **“doing well”** really meant.
