Some things always slap

Those dinners may not have looked special. There were no fancy table settings or overflowing dishes—just chipped plates, tired hands, and simple food carefully stretched to feed everyone. Yet those ordinary meals often carried something much deeper: love, sacrifice, and the quiet determination of parents who made sure their children had enough, even when they didn’t.

As children, we rarely understood what was happening behind the scenes. We simply remembered the familiar sounds and routines: the screen door closing, the television murmuring nearby, and the same worn pot coming out of the cabinet. But behind those moments were parents counting bills late at night, dividing paychecks carefully, and hiding their worries so their children could enjoy a sense of security.

Years later, many of us still crave the foods we grew up eating—fried bologna, boxed macaroni, beans, and cornbread. We may no longer eat them because we have to, but because they remind us where we came from. What once represented making do can now feel like comfort, tradition, and home.

The most meaningful part of those meals was never the food itself. It was the people sitting around the table and the sacrifices made to keep the family together. As the original passage puts it, **“love can stretch like dough and turn scarcity into ritual.”**

That is why those simple dinners stay with us. We remember the taste, but even more, we remember the feeling of being cared for. **“We were held together not by what was on the table, but by the people who kept showing up around it.”**
