The Car-Starting Habit Experts Say Can Cause Long-Term Damage

Many drivers start their cars and immediately drive away, thinking they are saving time. However, experts warn that this common habit can slowly damage the engine because the vehicle needs a short moment to prepare before handling normal driving conditions.

When a car sits for hours, engine oil settles at the bottom of the system. After starting, the oil pump needs time to move lubricant throughout the engine and reach important components. Mechanics explain that “the oil needs about 30 to 40 seconds to fully reach critical components such as pistons, bearings, and other moving parts.”

Driving immediately after starting can cause these parts to work without enough lubrication, creating extra friction and gradual wear. Over time, this can lead to problems such as damaged bearings and internal engine surfaces that may require costly repairs.

Experts recommend allowing the engine to run briefly before driving, especially during cold weather when oil moves more slowly. A short pause gives the oil time to circulate and reduces unnecessary stress on the engine. This small change in routine can help protect the vehicle and improve reliability.

Drivers should also avoid aggressive acceleration right after starting the car. Waiting until the engine begins warming up allows the vehicle to operate more efficiently and reduces long-term damage. Although the difference may seem small, these daily habits can have a major impact on the lifespan of an engine. A few extra seconds in the morning can help prevent expensive repairs in the future.
