The internet is baffled by this optical illusion of six girls with only five pairs of legs

Optical illusions can make ordinary images look surprisingly confusing. One viral photo shows six young women sitting closely together on a couch, yet at first glance, only five pairs of legs seem to be visible. The question quickly becomes: where did the sixth woman’s legs go? Nothing is actually missing. The illusion is created by the women’s positions, overlapping legs, similar clothing, and the way our brains connect each person’s body with the legs we see beneath them.

The image became a popular brain teaser because the answer is difficult to notice immediately. One Reddit user explained, “The second girl’s legs are behind the first girl’s legs.” This overlap makes two separate pairs appear to belong to the same person. Instead of clearly separating each woman, our brains naturally group the bodies and legs together, especially when the women are sitting so close to one another.

A useful clue is the ripped jeans. Another commenter explained, “Number 2 has a tear in her knee and a visible white sock.” Following that tear downward helps reveal which legs belong to the woman who seems to be missing them. The commenter also noted, “Those legs are blending together.” Once you trace the legs individually rather than matching them to the bodies above, the confusing arrangement starts to become clearer.

The illusion works because our brains constantly interpret visual information, making quick assumptions about shapes, depth, and where one object ends and another begins. Usually this helps us understand the world quickly, but unusual positioning can fool that system.

So, instead of counting the women first, try starting with the legs. Follow each one upward and look carefully at the ripped knee and white sock. Once you spot the hidden pair, the photograph suddenly makes sense. The fun part is that even after learning the answer, your brain may still need a moment to see what was there all along.
