The Number Of Squares You See Determines If You’re A Narcissist

At first glance, the image looks like a simple cookie with lines carved into it. But the caption, “The number of squares you see determines if you’re a narcissist,” has turned it into a popular online challenge. While the puzzle is entertaining, it is more about perception and attention than actual psychology.

Most people quickly notice the nine smaller squares inside the grid. Looking more carefully reveals additional shapes, including four larger squares made from smaller sections and the main square around everything. Altogether, the puzzle contains 14 squares. Finding them all suggests that someone is paying close attention to patterns and details.

The internet has created playful interpretations for different scores. Seeing 6–8 squares is said to represent a relaxed personality, while finding 9–11 may suggest a balanced and thoughtful approach. Those who spot 12–14 squares are jokingly described as perfectionists with strong focus and attention to detail. However, the idea that this reveals “narcissism” is only a fun claim and is not a real psychological test.

The puzzle works because people naturally focus on different things. Some notice the overall picture first, while others immediately search for hidden details. The challenge shows how differently our minds process information, but it does not measure personality traits or diagnose anyone. Real narcissism is far more complex and has nothing to do with counting shapes.

Beyond the viral joke, the square puzzle reminds us that everyone sees the world differently. Some people focus on small details, while others prefer the bigger picture. “Curiosity drives us to question and learn” — and that curiosity is a sign of engagement, not ego. So if you find all 14 squares, it probably means only one thing: you enjoy solving puzzles.
