The Red Cardigan

For her eighteenth birthday, a young woman received a red cardigan her grandmother had knitted by hand. At the time, she barely appreciated the gift, giving her grandmother a quick “thank you” before rushing out to celebrate with friends. Just a few weeks later, her grandmother passed away. The cardigan was placed in a closet and remained there for years, untouched because wearing it brought back painful memories and guilt.

Life continued through college, marriage, and motherhood, but the cardigan remained a quiet reminder of her grandmother. One afternoon, while cleaning with her fifteen-year-old daughter, they found it. The daughter immediately tried it on, but then stopped and said, “Mom, there’s something in the pocket.” Inside was a small, yellowed piece of paper that had been carefully preserved.

With trembling hands, she unfolded the note and recognized her grandmother’s handwriting. It read: **“May this keep you warm when I no longer can. To my dear girl — never forget how much you are cherished.”** The words brought her to tears. Standing beside her, her daughter gently held her hand, sharing the emotional moment.

The discovery helped her see the cardigan differently. It was no longer something connected only to regret and loss. It had become a lasting message of love from her grandmother, preserved for the moment she was finally ready to receive it.

She shared stories about her grandmother with her daughter, telling her about the woman’s strength, kindness, and generosity. Today, her daughter proudly wears the red cardigan. To them, it represents much more than clothing — it is a piece of their family history and a reminder that love can remain long after someone is gone.
