The Simple Explanation Behind the “E” on Certain Car Gear Levers

For decades, drivers have recognized familiar gear selector labels. Manual cars typically use numbered gears with an “R” for reverse, while automatics feature “P,” “R,” “N,” and “D.” However, some older vehicles also included an unusual letter: “E,” leaving many drivers wondering what it meant.

In older cars, “E” stood for **“Economy.”** This mode was designed to improve fuel efficiency by keeping engine revolutions lower and reducing unnecessary power output. It worked especially well during steady highway driving, allowing drivers to save fuel without relying on complicated technology. As the article explains, it was “a simple, mechanical way for drivers to prioritize efficiency over power.”

The feature reflected a time when drivers had more direct control over how their vehicles performed. Instead of advanced software making adjustments automatically, selecting the “E” setting gave motorists an easy way to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining a comfortable drive.

As vehicle technology improved, dedicated Economy settings became less important. Modern engines, fuel injection systems, and automatic transmissions continuously optimize performance and fuel use on their own. Because of these advancements, the separate “E” mode gradually disappeared from most cars.

Today, the meaning of “E” has evolved. Rather than representing Economy mode, it is more commonly linked to electric vehicles and the industry’s move toward cleaner transportation. What was once a simple fuel-saving feature now reminds drivers of how automotive technology has progressed—from manual efficiency controls to intelligent systems that automatically deliver the best balance of performance and economy.
