The Things You Can Take Home From A Hotel And The Things That You Absolutely Can’t

Staying at a hotel comes with plenty of small comforts, but **“provided for your use” doesn’t always mean “yours to take.”** Some items are meant for guests to use or keep, while others remain hotel property. Knowing the difference can help you avoid an unexpected charge or an awkward conversation at checkout.

Small toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, soap, toothpaste, shower caps, and other disposable personal-care items are generally safe to take when individually packaged. Basic hotel pens and notepads are also often intended for guests to keep, especially when they carry the hotel’s branding. Policies can vary, though, so anything unusual or expensive is worth checking with the front desk first.

Items that are part of the room itself should generally stay behind. This includes towels, bathrobes, sheets, blankets, pillows, duvets, furniture, lamps, artwork, electronics, coffee makers, kettles, hair dryers, irons, and other appliances. These items belong to the hotel and may be charged to your account if they are missing after checkout.

Hotel slippers can be different. Some are disposable and meant to be taken, while reusable or higher-quality slippers may need to remain in the room. Hangers can also depend on the property’s policy. The safest approach is to look for labels or information explaining what is complimentary and what is not.

If you really like something in the room, **“There’s nothing wrong with asking.”** Many hotels sell robes, pillows, bedding, mattresses, toiletries, and other amenities. Instead of quietly putting something in your suitcase, ask the front desk whether you can purchase it. When you’re unsure, **“Ask the hotel.”** A quick question can save you from an unwanted charge and make checkout much easier.
