The Truth About Washing Towels and Clothes Together: What You Should Know

Laundry may seem like a simple chore, but how you organize each load can affect how clean your clothes feel and how long they last. While it may be convenient to wash towels and clothing together, separating them can often produce better results because the fabrics have very different needs.

Towels are made from thick, absorbent fibers and are much heavier than most everyday clothing. They usually need more room in the washing machine, stronger cleaning, and more drying time. When towels are mixed with lighter garments, the extra weight and friction can put more stress on delicate fabrics, potentially affecting their softness, shape, or color over time.

Another problem is lint. Towels naturally release small fibers during washing and drying, especially when they are new or made from thick cotton. Those fibers can stick to clothing and become especially noticeable on darker fabrics. Towels also absorb sweat, oils, and moisture, so they need to be washed and dried thoroughly to help prevent unpleasant, musty odors.

For better results, it is generally best to wash towels separately and follow the care label for water temperature, detergent, and drying instructions. Clothing, meanwhile, often benefits from gentler cycles that help protect colors, elasticity, and fabric structure. As the original article puts it, **“Different fabrics have different needs,”** making separation a simple way to give each load the care it requires.

You do not need to make laundry complicated. Towels, sheets, and other heavy items can usually be grouped together, while everyday clothing can have its own load. Small changes like these can help keep towels fresh, clothes in better condition, and your laundry routine more effective.
