There’s A Reason Heinz Put “57” On Its Ketchup Bottles

For decades, families believed that Heinz “57” represented the number of secret ingredients or varieties hidden inside the famous ketchup recipe. The story sounded believable, but the truth was much simpler. The number was never meant to describe the actual ingredients or products. Instead, it became one of the most successful marketing ideas in food history.

Henry J. Heinz reportedly got the idea while riding on a train and seeing a shoe advertisement promoting “21 styles.” He realized that a number could make a product seem more interesting and memorable, even when it had no direct connection to what was being sold. Heinz then combined his lucky number five with his wife’s lucky number seven and created the famous phrase “57 varieties.”

The strange part was that the Heinz company already offered far more than 57 products. The number was not an accurate count, but customers never seemed to care. The phrase was catchy, easy to remember, and quickly became connected with the Heinz brand. Over time, people created their own explanations for what the number meant, helping the myth spread from one generation to another.

What began as a simple advertising trick eventually became part of everyday culture. The number appeared on bottles for decades, making it feel like an important fact rather than a carefully chosen marketing message.

In the end, Heinz’s greatest invention may not have been ketchup itself, but the story surrounding it. “57 varieties” shows how a clever idea can become so familiar that people stop questioning where it came from.
