Things You Should Never Plug Into a Power Strip

Power strips are common in almost every home, but using them the wrong way can create a serious fire hazard. As the article warns, **“the wrong plug can turn them into a ticking bomb.”** Many people unknowingly overload power strips by connecting devices that require far more electricity than they are designed to handle.

High-powered appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, space heaters, electric grills, and other heat-producing kitchen tools should never be plugged into a power strip. These devices draw large amounts of electricity, increasing the risk of overheating, damaged wiring, and even house fires. Instead, they should always be connected directly to a wall outlet with a dedicated circuit.

The danger becomes even greater when power strips are connected together, a practice known as daisy-chaining. This can overload electrical circuits and significantly increase the chance of overheating. Likewise, relying on power strips for essential equipment such as aquariums or medical devices can have serious consequences if the strip fails unexpectedly.

The safest approach is to reserve power strips for low-energy electronics like lamps, phone chargers, computers, and similar devices. As the article explains, **“low-power items such as lamps, phone chargers, and computers belong on power strips; anything that heats, cools, or keeps you alive belongs directly in the wall.”**

Following these simple guidelines can greatly reduce the risk of electrical fires and protect both your home and the people living in it. A small change in where you plug in your devices can make a significant difference in household safety.
