Think These Are Blackberries Take a Closer Look at These Tiny Black Fruits

### More Than Just Blackberries

At first glance, these dark berries may look like blackberries, but their elongated shape, rounded segments, and small green stems reveal that they are mulberries. Depending on the variety and ripeness, they can be red, deep purple, or nearly black. Mulberries grow on trees from the Morus genus, while blackberries grow on brambles. Their rich color comes largely from natural plant pigments called anthocyanins.

### A Naturally Nutritious Fruit

When ripe, mulberries are sweet, juicy, soft, and delicate. Each berry is made up of many small fruit segments and provides dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and other nutrients. Eating the whole fruit rather than drinking it as juice preserves the fiber and can make it a satisfying addition to a balanced diet. Fresh mulberries can easily be enjoyed with yogurt, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, or other fruit.

### Why Are They So Dark?

The deep color of mulberries is connected to polyphenols, including anthocyanins, which have attracted scientific interest because of their antioxidant activity. However, mulberries are not miracle foods and should not be viewed as a cure or prevention for disease. They are simply a nutritious fruit that can be included as part of a varied diet.

### Fresh or Dried?

Fresh mulberries are delicate and spoil quickly, so they should be refrigerated and washed shortly before eating. Dried mulberries are easier to store, but drying concentrates their natural sugars and calories. Some packaged varieties may also contain added sugar, so checking the label is useful when choosing them.

### Simple Ways to Enjoy Them

Mulberries can be eaten fresh on their own or added to everyday foods such as oatmeal and yogurt. For longer storage, fresh berries can be frozen in a single layer before being transferred to a freezer bag. Mulberry leaves are also traditionally used to make tea, although leaf products should not replace medical treatment.
