We went on vacation for a week. When we came back, we discovered this in the bathroom.

At first, it appeared almost fragile and strange on the wall, “like layers of burned paper molded into a cone, each cell perfectly shaped”. We couldn’t identify it, but it clearly didn’t belong there. The longer we stared, the more uneasy we felt, as if something alive or decaying might be forming inside our home.

We started guessing wildly, searching online and asking others for answers, convinced it might be something dangerous like “parasites, mold, even some bizarre fungal growth taking over our wall”. Every comparison made it worse, and our anxiety grew as we tried to understand what we were seeing.

Eventually, we discovered the truth: it was a “hornets’ nest”. Suddenly everything made sense—the faint buzzing we had ignored and the small debris scattered on the floor. What once felt mysterious now had a clear and alarming explanation.

Realizing the risk, we avoided the area and treated the bathroom like “enemy territory”. Fear quickly turned into urgency as we sealed the door and called professionals, deciding it was not something we should handle ourselves.

Watching the removal process from a distance left us shaken but relieved. We understood how dangerous it could have been if we had disturbed it earlier. In the end, there was a strange mix of fear and gratitude that we had discovered it in time.
