What Is That White String in an Egg

When you crack open an egg, you may notice a thin, white, string-like strand attached to the yolk. It can look unusual, but there is no reason to worry. That strand is called the **chalaza**, and it is a completely natural part of the egg.

The chalaza is made of protein and acts like a tiny stabilizer inside the egg. Its main purpose is to hold the yolk in place and keep it centered within the egg white. Most eggs have two chalazae, positioned on opposite sides of the yolk, although sometimes only one is easy to see after the shell is cracked.

Interestingly, the chalaza can also provide a clue about freshness. In a fresh egg, it is usually thicker, firmer, and more noticeable. As the egg gets older, the chalaza gradually becomes thinner and less visible. So when you see a clear, rope-like white strand, it can actually be reassuring because it often indicates that the egg is fresh.

There is also no need to remove it before cooking. The chalaza contains the same types of proteins found in egg whites and is completely safe to eat. Whether you fry, scramble, or bake the egg, it blends in during cooking and generally becomes unnoticeable. You might only choose to remove it when making very smooth dishes such as custards or delicate sauces.

What may initially look like something wrong with an egg is actually part of its natural design. The chalaza helps protect and stabilize the yolk while also offering a small clue about freshness. So the next time you spot that white string, remember: **“it’s not a defect—it’s a quiet sign of freshness.”**
