What Is the Strange Device Attached to My New Car Keys?

You finally get the keys to your new car and notice a small plastic tag or electronic-looking device attached to the keyring. Your first thought might be, “Wait… what is that?” While it may look like a tracking device, it is often simply part of a dealership’s key-control or inventory system. Dealerships handle hundreds of vehicles and many sets of keys, so these tags can help employees identify, organize, and locate them.

The exact device can vary. It might be a barcode or QR label, an RFID tag, a Bluetooth-enabled device, or another type of inventory equipment. Importantly, an RFID tag is not automatically a GPS tracker, and a simple barcode cannot track where you drive. Bluetooth devices can also have different purposes from GPS equipment. That means you should not assume the device is monitoring your vehicle simply because it looks electronic.

If the tag is still attached after you purchase the car, it may have been accidentally left there or may still be part of the dealership’s key-management process. Before removing it, look for a dealership logo, manufacturer name, model number, serial number, barcode, or QR code. These markings can help identify its purpose. “Don’t Judge It by Appearance Alone” because two similar-looking devices can use completely different technology.

If you are unsure, the simplest solution is to ask the dealership. Find out what the device is, who installed it, whether it collects or transmits information, and whether it should be returned or removed. This is especially useful with used vehicles, where the device could have been installed by a previous owner, fleet company, rental company, or dealership.

The bottom line is simple: “So don’t immediately rip it off, and don’t immediately assume you’re being tracked either.” Take a closer look, identify the device, and ask questions before throwing it away. If it appears connected to the vehicle or cannot be identified, having a qualified automotive professional inspect it can provide a definite answer.
