What Really Happens When You Sleep on Your Right Side? Here’s What to Know

Sleeping position can affect how comfortable you feel at night, especially if you experience acid reflux or digestive discomfort. Sleeping on the right side is generally safe, but some people may notice more reflux symptoms in this position, particularly after eating close to bedtime. This is partly related to the stomach’s shape and the effect of gravity when you lie down, which can allow stomach contents to move toward the esophagus more easily.

For some people, sleeping on the left side may be more comfortable because it can help keep stomach contents lower and reduce the chance of acid moving upward. Research suggests that lying on the left side may result in less acid exposure during the night. However, this does not mean the right side is harmful, and many people sleep comfortably on it without experiencing any problems.

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. It can cause symptoms such as a burning feeling in the chest, a sour taste, or discomfort after meals. These symptoms may become more noticeable at night, especially after large meals, certain foods or drinks, or lying down shortly after eating.

Simple changes may help reduce nighttime discomfort. Try leaving some time between dinner and bedtime, avoid foods that regularly trigger your symptoms, and maintain a consistent sleep routine. These habits can be just as important as the position you choose when sleeping.

If you sleep comfortably on your right side and have no reflux symptoms, there is usually no strong reason to change your position. But if discomfort happens regularly, trying the left side may help. Persistent or severe reflux symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
