What to Do If You Start Seeing Eye Floaters

Eye floaters are common and usually appear as tiny spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision. They are easiest to notice when looking at something bright, such as a clear sky or white wall. According to Healthline, floaters form when collagen fibers clump together inside the vitreous, the gel-like substance in the eye. As we age, this gel shrinks and the fibers can cast shadows on the retina, creating the appearance of floaters.

Some people also notice flashes of light. These can happen when the vitreous pulls on the retina and may appear as brief bursts of light. Floaters and flashes are more common in adults between 50 and 75, people who are nearsighted, and those who have had cataract surgery. Most cases are harmless, but sudden changes should not be ignored.

New or increasing floaters, frequent flashes, or vision loss can sometimes point to more serious problems, including a retinal tear, retinal detachment, inflammation, or bleeding inside the eye. In these situations, prompt medical attention is important because early treatment can help protect vision.

Doctors can check the cause with a dilated eye exam. According to Vision Center, eye drops are used to widen the pupils so the doctor can examine the retina and look for abnormalities. Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Options may include vitrectomy, a surgery that removes the vitreous, while laser treatment can break up some floaters, although it remains experimental and is not always recommended.

Regular eye examinations and paying attention to sudden changes in vision are among the best ways to protect your eyesight. While occasional floaters are usually nothing to worry about, **”new or worsening symptoms may signal more serious eye conditions.”**
