What’s Hiding Beside This Path?

That plain concrete post was never meant to be beautiful. Yet standing knee-high among the weeds, it can reveal a surprising piece of the past. If you’re walking along an old railroad bed or a fading trail and notice a small concrete post marked “R/W” or “SRD,” you may be looking at a **right-of-way marker**. Its purpose was simple: to mark the legal boundary of a road or route, even after the road itself disappeared.

Over time, pavement can crumble, signs can rust away, and people can forget where an old road once ran. But these small markers may remain, quietly pointing to the route that once connected homes, farms, or communities. The marker itself may look insignificant, but it can provide evidence that a planned roadway once passed through the area.

Once you recognize one, the landscape can suddenly look different. A shallow depression, a slight rise in the ground, or scattered gravel may no longer seem random. Instead, these details can form a pattern showing where an old road once traveled. What looks like an ordinary patch of woods may actually preserve traces of a forgotten daily route.

That’s what makes these markers fascinating. They remind us that history isn’t always found in famous buildings or major landmarks. Sometimes, it survives in something as simple as a concrete post hidden in the weeds. It quietly tells us, **“A road once lived here.”**

And perhaps that is the most interesting part: something people once passed every day without noticing can eventually become the clue that helps us understand a vanished road and the community that once depended on it.
