What’s The Deal With Buttons On Opposite Sides?

Have you ever noticed that men’s and women’s shirts have buttons on opposite sides? Many people never think about it until they see the difference. Men’s clothing usually has buttons on the right side, while women’s clothing has them on the left. This small design choice has existed for centuries and is connected to old clothing traditions rather than practicality today.

The difference began during the 19th century when women’s clothing was often much more complicated, with layers of fabric, corsets, and detailed designs. Many wealthy women had maids who helped them get dressed. According to *Live Science*, buttons were placed differently because “most people are right-handed,” making it easier for someone else to fasten the clothing while helping another person dress.

Over time, clothing became simpler, and most people began dressing themselves without assistance. However, the button placement remained unchanged. What was once a practical solution for maids became a tradition passed down through generations. Today, many people question why clothing designs still follow these old gender-based rules.

The difference is especially noticeable when comparing jackets, shirts, and coats from men’s and women’s sections. Some shoppers even prefer men’s clothing because the button placement can feel easier to use, especially for right-handed people. The original reason behind the design no longer applies to modern everyday life.

Although society’s views on gender and fashion continue to change, clothing companies still often follow these historical patterns. As the article notes, “It doesn’t make much sense for buttons to be situated on clothes according to gender anymore.” A simple change in design could allow clothing to focus more on comfort and personal preference rather than traditions from the past.
