What’s the Purpose of That Tiny Hole in a Safety Pin?

A tiny hole near the clasp of a safety pin can be more useful than it looks. By threading string, yarn, or cord through the opening and securing it, you can create an extra grip while guiding the pin through narrow fabric casings. This works especially well for waistbands, sleeves, drawstrings, and elastic. The attached cord makes the pin easier to control and retrieve if it becomes difficult to move through the fabric.

You do not always need expensive sewing supplies for simple jobs. **“Mark fabric with dry soap”** is an old-fashioned trick that can provide a temporary visible line and can usually be removed when the fabric is washed. It is a simple alternative when tailor’s chalk is not available.

Backstitching is another basic technique that can make handmade clothing and other projects stronger. Sewing backward over the beginning or end of a seam helps keep the stitches from coming loose. Proper knots can also improve the finish. Wrapping thread around the needle before pulling it through creates a compact knot that can stay securely in place.

The way you place pins can also make sewing easier. **“Pin diagonally”** to help hold fabric layers together while making the pins easier to remove as you approach them with a needle or sewing machine. This small adjustment can make working with several layers of fabric more convenient.

One traditional technique that remains useful is using beeswax on thread. **“Running thread through beeswax prevents tangles and strengthens seams, making stitching smoother and sturdier.”** Together with the other simple methods, these tricks show that useful sewing does not always require complicated equipment. Sometimes, the simplest techniques are the ones worth remembering.
