What’s the Reason Behind Painting Trees White?

Many trees have their lower trunks painted white, and it is **not** just for decoration. As the article explains, **”This is not for decoration but to protect the bark from sunscald.”** Sunscald is similar to sunburn in plants and often happens during winter when cold nights are followed by warm, sunny days. These sudden temperature changes can cause the bark to crack, making the tree more vulnerable to diseases, fungi, and insects. Painting the trunk white reflects sunlight, keeps the bark cooler, and reduces the risk of damage. This method is especially useful for young trees with thin bark and for fruit trees in orchards until they become stronger.

White paint is the most common choice because it reflects heat better than darker colors. The article notes that **”White paint helps moderate daytime heating of the bark and reduces the risk of sunscald.”** While white paint protects trees, other paint colors and markings may have completely different meanings. They can indicate that a tree is diseased, needs pruning or removal, marks a private trail, or identifies the location of endangered wildlife. Because there is no universal system, local rules should always be checked before interpreting painted trees. In many U.S. states, purple paint is commonly used to mark private property.

If you choose to paint a tree, use the correct materials. A water-based latex paint diluted with about one gallon of latex paint to four or five quarts of water is recommended. Oil-based paint should never be used because **”it can seal the bark and prevent the tree from absorbing oxygen.”** A paintbrush is preferred since it provides better coverage than spraying.

In most cases, one coat is enough to protect the tree. However, regions with harsh weather may require a fresh coat each year. Young trees benefit the most from this simple treatment because it helps prevent damage during their early years. By using the proper type of paint and applying it correctly, tree owners can protect bark from sunscald and support healthy growth without causing unnecessary harm.
