Why a Balloon in Your Shower Drain Won’t Stop Pests—and What Actually Works Instead

A viral household trick suggests that placing a balloon over a shower drain can help keep insects and pests away. The idea seems cheap and simple, making it tempting for many homeowners to try. However, like many online hacks, it may promise more than it can actually achieve. Bathrooms attract pests because of several conditions, and blocking one drain does not always solve the real issue.

Moisture, warmth, and hidden spaces make bathrooms ideal environments for insects. Although drains can sometimes be used as entry points, pests may also enter through small cracks, plumbing gaps, damaged seals, doors, or windows. A balloon over the drain is not made to provide a reliable or hygienic barrier. It can move, wear out, or become difficult to manage when the shower needs to be used. Even if it blocks one possible entrance, it does not prevent pests from finding another way inside.

The better approach is to focus on preventing the conditions that attract insects in the first place. Fixing leaks, lowering humidity, improving airflow, cleaning drains, and sealing openings around pipes and fixtures can make a bathroom far less appealing to pests.

If the problem continues, a professional inspection may help find hidden entry points that are easy to miss. Viral solutions can look convenient, but long-term results usually come from fixing the source of the problem rather than relying on a temporary cover. As the article explains, “lasting results come from addressing the source of the problem—not just covering one small part of it.”
