Why Do Jeans Get Weird Ripples After Washing?

If your favorite jeans come out of the washer with strange ripples, puckering, or wavy lines around the seams and thighs, the problem is usually caused by changes in the fabric rather than permanent damage. Denim is often made from cotton, which can shrink when exposed to heat and moisture. When different parts of the jeans shrink at different rates, especially around seams and reinforced areas, the fabric can buckle and create visible ripples.

Another possible cause is tension from the manufacturing process. Jeans are stitched under different levels of tension, and those stresses may only become noticeable after washing. Stretch denim can be even more sensitive because materials such as elastane or spandex react differently from cotton. With repeated washing and drying, these fibers may lose their shape unevenly, leading to twisting or warping.

The way you wash your jeans can also make a difference. **Overloading your washing machine** can cause denim to twist, tangle, and become distorted, especially when heavier items are included in the same load. Rough washing and high temperatures can make the problem worse by putting extra stress on the fibers.

High-heat drying is another common mistake. **Air drying is gentler and helps jeans retain shape.** Excessive heat can cause denim fibers to shrink unevenly and, in some cases, make wrinkles and ripples harder to remove.

To protect your jeans, wash them in cold water and turn them inside out before placing them in the machine. Choose a gentle cycle, avoid stuffing too many clothes into one load, and skip high-heat drying whenever possible. Letting jeans air dry can help them maintain their original shape and reduce the chance of new ripples appearing.
