Why Do People Lift Their Windshield Wipers When They Park? The Real Reason Explained

If you’ve ever seen cars parked with their windshield wipers standing upright, you may have wondered why. The most common reason is winter weather. When temperatures drop below freezing, moisture can turn to ice and cause the wiper blades to stick tightly to the windshield. Pulling frozen blades away can damage the rubber or even strain the wiper arms. Raising them before a snow or ice storm keeps them away from the glass and can make clearing the windshield much easier the next morning.

Another benefit is preventing snow from building up around the wipers. When blades are buried under heavy snow or ice, drivers may be tempted to turn them on before clearing the windshield. That can put unnecessary stress on the wiper mechanism. As the article explains, “windshield wipers are designed to clear water and light debris—not push heavy accumulations of frozen material across the glass.” Keeping them raised can make snow removal simpler and reduce the risk of damage.

Some drivers also raise their wipers during very hot weather, believing it protects the rubber from a hot windshield. Heat, sunlight, and ultraviolet exposure can contribute to rubber deterioration, but raising the blades does not completely protect them. It is better considered a personal precaution rather than a guaranteed way to extend their lifespan.

There is generally no reason to leave wipers raised all the time. They are designed to rest against the windshield, and constant elevation provides little benefit in mild weather. The practice is most useful when freezing temperatures, snow, or ice are expected.

Most importantly, pay attention to the condition of the blades. Streaking, skipping, chattering, cracks, or poor visibility can mean they need replacement. If wipers are frozen, never force them away from the glass or use them to scrape thick ice. Instead, clear loose snow and use the vehicle’s defroster or a suitable ice scraper. In cold climates, raising the wipers is simply a small habit that can make winter mornings easier.
