Why Public Restroom Stall Doors Have Gaps at the Bottom

If you’ve ever used a public restroom, you may have noticed that stall doors often stop several inches above the floor. It might seem like an odd design choice, especially when privacy is the main purpose of a restroom stall. However, the gap is intentional and serves several practical purposes. Architects and facility designers use this design to balance privacy with safety, ventilation, cleanliness, maintenance, and cost.

One important reason is safety. If someone inside a stall becomes sick or needs help, the open space makes it easier for staff or emergency responders to notice a problem and communicate with the person. It can also make access easier during an emergency without immediately having to force open a locked door. In this way, the design provides privacy while still allowing a certain level of visibility and accessibility when necessary.

Ventilation is another major benefit. Public restrooms can become warm, humid, and unpleasant because many people use them throughout the day. The space beneath the doors allows air to move more freely, helping ventilation systems circulate air throughout the room. This can reduce moisture, lingering odors, and stuffiness, creating a more comfortable environment.

The gap also makes cleaning much easier. Workers can mop and sanitize the floor without having to open every stall door, saving time during routine maintenance. It also reduces the amount of contact and wear on hinges, locks, and doors.

So, although the gap beneath a restroom stall door may seem strange, it is actually a carefully considered feature. It helps with safety, airflow, cleaning, and maintenance while still providing reasonable privacy. What looks like a simple design choice is actually the result of practical planning for busy public spaces.
