Why Some Dogs Wear Blue Vests, Bandanas, or Leashes

Have you ever seen a dog wearing a blue vest, bandana, or leash and wondered what it means? While blue may simply be a color the owner likes, it can sometimes signal that a dog is a service animal, therapy dog, or is currently being trained. However, **“blue does not have one universal official meaning for every dog.”** The color alone cannot confirm what role a dog has.

Service dogs are trained to help people with disabilities. They may guide people with visual impairments, provide mobility assistance, or alert their handlers to certain medical conditions. When blue equipment is used as a signal, it can serve as a reminder that the dog is working and should not be distracted.

Therapy dogs have a different role. They may visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other facilities to provide comfort and companionship. Blue accessories can also be worn by puppies and dogs undergoing training. In these cases, the vest or bandana can work somewhat like a **“student driver” sign**, showing that the dog is learning and should not be approached or distracted without permission.

Still, a blue collar, leash, or bandana does not automatically mean a dog is a service or therapy animal. Some owners simply choose blue because they like how it looks. Other colors and accessories may also carry different meanings, but these signals can vary from one dog to another.

No matter why a dog is wearing blue, giving unfamiliar dogs and their handlers space is always a good idea. If a dog appears to be working, avoid petting, feeding, calling, or approaching it without permission. The next time you see a dog in blue, remember it could be a service dog, therapy animal, a dog in training, or simply a pet whose owner loves the color.
