Why Some People Put Bay Leaves in Their Mop Water

Cleaning floors is a regular chore, but there is a simple trick some people like to add to their routine: putting a few dried bay leaves in the mop bucket. Bay leaves are usually used in soups, sauces, and stews because of their herbal fragrance. When added to warm mop water, they can release a subtle scent while you clean. The method is inexpensive and requires almost no extra effort. You only need two or three dried bay leaves, warm water, your usual floor cleaner if appropriate, and a clean mop.

Before mopping, sweep or vacuum the floor to remove dust, crumbs, hair, and other loose dirt. This is important because bay leaves are not a cleaning product. Fill a bucket with warm water, add two or three dried bay leaves, and let them sit briefly. If you normally use a floor cleaner, continue using it according to the product instructions and make sure it is safe for your type of flooring. Then mop as you normally would, using the correct amount of water for the surface.

The bay leaves are mainly an aromatic addition, not a disinfectant. As the article explains, “They should not be considered a replacement for a floor cleaner or disinfectant.” If you need to disinfect an area because of illness or contamination, use an appropriate product instead. Removing the actual source of unpleasant odors, such as food residue, spills, dirt, or moisture, is also more effective than simply covering the smell with fragrance.

It is also important to consider the type of flooring in your home. Tile may tolerate more moisture, while wood, laminate, and natural stone can require special care. The bay leaves themselves are not usually the main concern; the amount of water and cleaning products used can be. Always follow your flooring manufacturer’s instructions and test an unfamiliar cleaning method on a small area first.

Finally, keep the mop and bucket clean as well. Rinse the mop after use and allow it to dry completely, since a damp mop can develop unpleasant odors. Empty and rinse the bucket too. Bay leaves will not transform the cleaning process, but if you enjoy their natural herbal scent, adding a couple to warm mop water can make an ordinary household chore feel a little fresher.
